Gilman Guide 5.0

In your essays, avoid making general statements.  Rather, point to specific reasons, examples and benefits.  For example, if you are applying to study in Argentina, rather than saying something like “I want to experience a new culture,” it would be more effective to say something like “I want to live in a host family in Argentina so I can experience first-hand the center of Latin American culture:  the family.”
