Getting Started

CHS New Faculty Orientation 2013 – PowerPoint presentation from August 20 orientation, with live links.

Here are the things you need to do before you can submit a grant proposal at VCU:

Sponsored Programs Training
All Principal Investigators (PIs), investigators and VCU staff who are involved in sponsored projects or manage funds in sponsored project accounts are required to complete this training program. The training programs are available on Blackboard and should take approximately one (1) hour each to complete. To access the program, go to the VCU home page (www.vcu.edu), click on Blackboard and log-in using your VCU eID. Once in Blackboard, click on the Courses tab and select “School Required Training for PIs, Researchers and Administrators.” Select the tab that best defines your role, i.e., “Investigator Training” or “Administrator Training.” All individuals must score a minimum of 80% on each of the corresponding examinations to successfully complete the training program.

AIRS COI Reporting
The Activity and Interests Reporting System (AIRS) for Financial Interests reporting is required for individuals designated as ‘COI investigators’ on the Internal Approval Form (IAF) submitted to the Office of Sponsored Programs (OSP).  You will need to enter the AIRS to report Financial Interests at this time. The URL is: https://airs.research.vcu.edu

NSF FastLane account
If you are submitting a proposal to NSF through the FastLane system for the first time, you will need to request a FastLane account from OSP.  Click on the link above to access the online form.  Everything you could ever want to know about using FastLane can be found at FastLane Help.

NIH eRA Commons account
If you are submitting a proposal to NIH for the first time, you will need to request an account with NIH eRA Commons from OSP.  Click on the link above to access the online form.  IMPORTANT NOTE: NIH proposals at VCU are built and submitted using the VCUeRA system (InfoEd).

As a new investigator, you will also need to be aware of the various policies affecting grants and contracts:
