Mayo Clinic Book of Alternative Medicine is a wonderful book for people who are looking for natural, safe remedies for their health and well-being, instead of choosing the conventional method of taking medicine. It is a good book because it discusses the most common therapies that patients use to treat any health conditions or injuries they may have. The book is in simple, easy to read, everyday language. This book is recommended for people who are looking into safer, nontraditional treatments. A growing number of people are choosing alternative medicine due to alternative medicine having fewer side effects. Some of the most popular methods are yoga, meditation, and natural products. “People use alternative treatments for an array of diseases and conditions” (Mayo Clinic Book of Alternative Medicine 15). Some of the common conditions that alternative medicine treats are arthritis, chronic pain, depression, stress, and anxiety.
Other reasons people choose nontraditional medicine are for managing their cholesterol, headaches, and improving insomnia. Headaches are very common for adults. Being able to manage headaches is a balance between practicing healthy habits such as eating fruits and vegetables, finding effective non-drug treatments and using medications appropriately. Acupuncture, massage, herbs, vitamins, and minerals are some alternative treatments to relieving and reducing headache pain.
High cholesterol is another condition that can be treated with nontraditional methods. It can be prevented also by living a healthy lifestyle and diet. There are several medications to help lower cholesterol. Statins are one of the common medications that lower cholesterol. Lipitor and Crestor are popular types of statin drugs. Cholesterol can also be treated with alternative medicine. Some natural remedies for high cholesterol are soy supplements and garlic.
Insomnia can be treated with alternative treatments. This sleep disorder can be managed by sleeping on a set schedule, exercising and staying active, avoiding or limiting caffeine, alcohol and nicotine, avoiding or limiting naps, and minimizing sleep distractions. Some nontraditional methods for treating insomnia are through guided imagery, lavender, and music therapy.
There are several reasons why patients decide to take alternative treatments. By choosing this approach, one cares for the body, mind, and spirit. Alternative treatments allow the body, mind, and spirit to heal quicker and be at a peaceful state. Choosing nontraditional medicine is a safer approach to having long-term health and wellness.
