A New CTE Learning Path about Online Teaching

Are some of your colleagues wondering if online teaching is for them? Are you? The CTE has developed a new learning path for faculty who wish to explore whether online teaching and learning is a good fit for their program. Through three consecutive Monday sessions, you and your colleagues will engage in a conversation around the changing environment for teaching, the evolution of online learning, and guiding principles and best practices for online teaching and learning.
All sessions will be held in Harris Hall room 5182 at noon.

  • October 15: The Web and the Changing Landscape of Learning
  • October 22: The Growth and Evolution of eLearning
  • October 29: Guiding Principles for Online Teaching and Learning

Additional information is available at http://www.vcu.edu/cte/resources/TeachingOnline/LearningPath.html. Those who actively participate in this learning path will be able to discuss key factors shaping the growth and role of online learning in higher education, consider the extent to which online teaching / course development is a “good fit” for your teaching philosophy and subject matter, locate online teaching resources at VCU, and make informed decisions about possible next steps for pursuing online teaching. The three ninety-minute sessions are supplemented by readings from Palloff and Pratt’s (2007) Building Online Learning Communities. Registered participants will receive their free book at the first session.

Please pass the word about this learning opportunity. Interested faculty members are asked to submit an application letter or email by 4:00pm, October 1, 2012, to Britt Watwood (bwatwood@vcu.edu) that includes the following:

  • Name
  • Department / School
  • Email address
  • Phone number
  • Short paragraph listing what interests you about online teaching and learning
  • Confirmation that you can attend the three scheduled sessions (October 15, 22, and 29)

This Learning Path is one of a number of programs for faculty provided by the CTE on the topic of online teaching and learning. Two other options you may find interesting are the Gallery of Online Teaching videos and the Online Course Showcase. The Gallery is a series of vignettes and personal stories told by successful online instructors at VCU, who examine the question: What does learning look like in the online environment? The Online Course Showcase held on alternate Fridays at noon in Harris 5182 provides an opportunity for you to see actual courses and hear them described by your VCU colleagues.
If you have any questions about the new Learning Path or any of our Teaching Online programs, contact Britt Watwood at bwatwood@vcu.edu or (804) 828-1896.
