Entry Level/Director of Marketing/Rehabilitation Center

Don’t let the title of the position fool you.  I talked to the hiring manager and he will take someone that is 1-2 years out of school with limited experience or a May 2011 graduate if it is the right fit.

This is a Rehabilitation Center located in the West End.  The pay is probably b/w 35 & 40K.

If you are interested, email your resume and cover letter to dward@vcu.edu.

Mock Interviewing Program & Informational Interviewing Program

Ok Everyone,

The last thing I need is for you to get these two programs confused.   Here is what you need to know:

Informational Interviewing:  We are having an information session for this program on April 4th from 2-3pm in room B2165.  This is the program where you complete an interest form (see below).  I will set you up with an employer who is doing the type of work you may want to do one day.  We use this program to explore majors and careers.  So far 40 students this semester have gone to an employer’s company to interview them.  Marvin Evans, a Post Bacc, Accounting student, had a chance to meet Shawn, an accountant from Dominion VA Power.  Marvin went there to interview the employer about the field, talk about his responsibilities, how he got into the field, etc.  Marvin was the one who was asking the questions.  I have heard back from both Marvin and Shawn.  Things went so well that Marvin gets really good career advice from a professional who has turned into his mentor.

If you have any questions about the program, come on out so we can answer them.  This is a brief PowerPoint and Q & A.  If you can not attend the program, you can still email me the form in to me to participate.

**********************************************************************************************************

Mock Interview:  Now, this program is going to be held on April 11 & April 13th.  I am going to invite a few employers to come to the Business Career Center on those days (from 9-4pm).  Each of you who signs up will get a 30-45 minute appointment with an employer representative.  He/she will review your resume, critique your professional attire, and then ask you some behavioral interviewing questions.  After you answer, they will give you feedback on your answers.  If you want to get practice before you go on a REAL interview here’s your chance.

Do you have any questions about either program?  Let me know.  There is no advance sign up for the informational interviewing program….just complete the form and either bring it with you to the information session or just email the form if you can’t attend.

The Mock Interviewing Program sign ups will begin this Thursday.  You can sign up manually or email me your request using a form I will post on my blog later this week.  It is going to be a first come, first serve basis, for both Engineering and Business students, so do not hesitate!

Wow, I am excited about both of these programs.  Looking forward to hearing back from you.

Thanks!  Go Rams!

Franklin Street Marketing Internship

INTERNSHIP OPPORTUNITIES

New Healthcare Industries, New Clients

Date:     March 15, 2011

To:          School Internship

From:    Sarah Simon, Account Manager

Re:         Internship Opportunities for Franklin Street Marketing

Intern Candidates:

This project is ideal for a junior or senior with a passion for research, marketing, PR and on-line searches. Must be a process oriented person, interested in research and writing.  10 or more hours per week. Student can work from home with a weekly progress report.

Overview:

Franklin Street Marketing is hoping to leverage its 20+ years of hospital marketing experience to serve other healthcare industries.  We believe that our ability to communicate and market to physicians, patients and healthcare consumers will be invaluable to companies that manufacture medical devices, and health related technologies.

A good example would be our recent campaign for Memorial Health System promoting Novalis radiation oncology equipment. The Novalis machine makes radiation treatment more comfortable, more convenient, and more effective for patients with cancer.

In addition to oncology, we have a deep understanding of other key medical services–cardiology, orthopedics (joints, back and spine), neurosciences (brain surgery and stroke care), sleep disorders, wound care, bariatric surgery, general surgery, laparoscopic and robotic surgery.

So, we are interested in working with any company that makes a product, device or technology for these medical specialties.   An example of such a company would be Anulex Technologies in Minnetonka, Minn. that develops technologies and surgical techniques to improve treatment of herniated disks.

Have we marketed medical products before?  Yes. We launched a campaign for a new safety scalpel for Personna Medical back in 2008.  The campaign included trade print ads, trade show materials and exhibit booth, website and PR support.

Scope-of-work:

Research and identify companies that produce medical products, devices and technologies for the specialties listed above. Compile the data in an Excel spreadsheet with the following data fields: company names, names of CEO/President, VP of Marketing, Marketing PR Director, titles, e-mails, phone numbers, corporate address, affiliations, total billings to profits, number of employees and brief description about what products or services they offer.

The intern will submit an initial Excel template using one company as a guide for listing all the information outlined above. This template will be modified as needed and approved by Franklin Street.

Introducing themselves as a graduate student doing a white paper on healthcare marketing, the intern will interview marketing directors, trade publication editors, tradeshow organizers and decision makers on the provider side.  We anticipate up to 10 interviews. Interview questions may include:

·

How does a medical device company market their products to healthcare providers?

·

Who are the key decision makers when making a purchase?

·

What mediums do they use?

·

What tradeshows are important?

·

What publications?

·

How are they using the internet? Search terms? Social media?

·

Who in their company is responsible for marketing?

·

Do they use an advertising agency? A PR firm? Do they specialize in healthcare marketing?

·

What is the name of their agency?

·

What is the typical marketing budget?

Deliverables–

after the research is complete, findings will be summarized in a document that includes:

·

A situation analysis and overview describing what types of companies are in the U.S. and perhaps abroad;

·

how and where they currently market and advertise;

·

who is the primary decision maker when purchasing the product or service (physicians, hospital purchasing agents, clinical directors, nurses?);

·

what mediums should be considered for marketing to healthcare providers (publications, tradeshows, key influencers, internet search SEO, social media, direct mail, e-mail?); and

·

what approach Franklin Street should consider for building business in this new niche.

·

The Excel list of all companies should follow

Learning Opportunity:

The intern will gain experience working at a national marketing firm that specializes in healthcare marketing and public relations.  Healthcare is the second fastest growing industry in the United States. (Technology is #1)  Through this assignment, the intern will learn about marketing communications research and best practices in marketing to healthcare providers.  The experience gained will also help the intern with future employment within the fastest growing medium–internet marketing and PR.

Congratulations to Nick Lowery! Newest intern at Rose Property Group!

Nick Lowery  is a Finance major, graduating in June 11.  Our emails begin early last fall and he has been a huge fan of both the University and Business Career Centers every since.   He has an awesome resume and is extremly professional, which made him a real stand out student at our career fairs.

On March 21, Nick formally accepted an offer from Rose Property Group for the Summer 2011 Management Training Internship Program.  Nick told me that he  met two representatives at the VCU Career Fair on February 1, 2011.  One of the representatives, Matt, passed his resume along, and he was given a phone interview in late February.  The second interview came over spring break, and he was offered the position late last week.

The program consists of an 11-week case study where he will travel between the Richmond property and the main office in Indianapolis.

Nick says that this is a fantastic opportunity and I agree.  I have had students intern there before and I know Rose Property Group offers an incredible learning experience.

Here was a personal note to me and my colleagues from Nick, which means a lot.  “I am grateful to you and the VCU Career Center for great relationships with local employers; indeed, I would have not had this opportunity if it were not for Career Services inviting Rose Properties to the fair.

I couldn’t have hoped for a better Internship, and I will represent VCU Business well.  Thank you for your resume help, your suggestions for improvement, organizing VCU’s mock interviews and workshops, and your support through your blog and updates on Ramsrecruiting.  I look forward to staying updated on Career Center events and keeping you updated on future successes”.

Nick, THANK YOU for your participation and your support of our Career Center programming.  This is why we do what we do….so all of our students can find this kind of success.  All the best to you!!

Your counselor,

Darlene
