The Virginia Department of Taxation (TAX) is seeking a Staff Internal Auditor to assist with evaluating the adequacy, design, and function of TAX’s internal controls. This position will be responsible for assisting more experienced auditors determine audit objectives, analyzing program requirements and participating in the development of audit procedures and applying knowledge of accounting functions and principles. This position focuses on the evaluation of internal controls, risk assessment, and governance process reviews so that conclusions can be developed about the most effective way to ensure and maintain system operational compliance.
Additional Responsibilities and Duties:
Performing audits of business processes and controls.
Testing system integrity and reliability, system controls, and data security.
Providing system support for audits by downloading and retrieving data.
Assisting with the preparation and finalization of reports and oral presentations.
Knowledge of the audit process, including knowledge of generally accepted accounting principles and the Institute of Internal Auditor’s Standard for the Professional Practice of Internal Auditing or Generally Accepted Government Audit Standards
Knowledge of accounting systems; understanding of internal controls; financial analysis and use of operational audit techniques
Knowledge of what compromises competent, evidential matter
Knowledge of a wide variety of information technology activities, including computer system operations, system development techniques, and information systems security
Knowledge of computer systems, including an understanding of retrieval software
Knowledge and understanding of the client server environment
Ability to analyze financial and non-financial data to arrive at logical conclusions and to identify areas of audit concern
Ability to take initiative and be creative in developing audit procedures
Ability to apply principles and concepts of information systems to audits
Ability to utilize computer-assisted audit techniques
In order to be successful in this role, the incumbent must possess good interpersonal skills along with the ability to work independently; to communicate well verbally and in writing; and to interpret pertinent laws and regulations to specific situations. A college degree in information systems, accounting, business, finance or public administration is preferred. This position requires little to no travel.
Anticipated starting salary up to $48,195.
The selected candidate will be prohibited from performing tax or accounting services for compensation during or outside business hours. A background investigation including criminal history and tax records will be conducted. A Statement of Economic Interest is also required.
