Why is our report due on April 30th?

We used to be able to wait until the end of May to have faculty do their reporting. However, the timetable for Quest now has the school’s annual report due to the Provost on July 1 instead of August 1–as it was in the past. Given exams and other end-of-semester business, our experience is that we need to allot a month for the the department chairs and unit heads to do FES scoring and their annual reports. We simply can’t get the school’s report to the Provost on time if we have a May 31 deadline for FES, so that’s why we have an April 30 deadline.

More enhancements to FES!

Based on faculty suggestions, we have implemented more new features to FES! Here are the highlights:

  • We’ve created a ‘printer friendly’ version of your FES record! Simply choose the evaluation period from the drop down and then click the “Print or Export to Word document” button.
  • You can now upload the syllabi associated with each of the courses you taught this year. Like uploading your CV, faculty can choose to make their syllabi available online with their online directory profile.
  • You can now upload your CV/resume! Access this feature by clicking on the appointment section of FES or the section called “Documents” listed in the breadcrumbs at the top. If you want your CV available to the public through our website, click the “Show CV in my online profile in the Business School directory” box.
  • We’ve added hyperlinks/anchors at the top of each section so that you can quickly see all of the topics contained in that section. Should save you some scrolling time.

What’s New on FES?

Between the end of last year and the opening of FES for 12-13 data collection, we’ve been busy implementing many your suggestions. Here are the highlights of what we have done or are currently working on. Stay tuned as we continue improving FES!

Faculty requested the ability to upload their CV/resume. We’ve added that function on the appointment section of FES. Just click on the “Upload CV” link in item A1 and then check the “Show CV in my online profile in the Business School directory” box if you want people to be able to view your CV.

We’ve added hyperlinks/anchors at the top of each section so that you can quickly see all of the topics contained in that section. Should save you some scrolling time.

We are working on adding a feature which allows the faculty to upload the syllabus associated with each of the courses they taught in the business school. Like uploading their CV, faculty can opt, if they wish, to show their syllabi on their online directory profile. That will be made available by the end of October.

Many of our faculty requested a ‘printer friendly’ version of their FES record. We are in the process of working out the tweaks of adding that function and plan to have it available by November 1st.

You’re probably familiar with the University’s Quest for Distinction; in alignment with several of the themes/goals, we’ve added a few items in FES. For the metric “# of interdisciplinary publications” of Theme III, Goal B, we’ve added a interdisciplinary check box for items C3a1, C3a2, and C5a. For Theme IV, Goal C, we’re also collecting data on whether a course includes sustainability. Finally, we’ve added a place in the teaching section to collect data on undergraduate students engaged with research projects with faculty.

You may see more tweaks and changes as we move through the fall semester. We’ll be posting updates on those issues here.

We have a Help Guide at http://www.business.vcu.edu/feshelp.html; check it out!

Documenting Dean’s Research Seminars

Question: Where should I document attending a Dean’s Research Seminar?

Answer: We recommend that you put attending a Dean’s Research Seminar in C3j “Other Discipline Based Scholarship not Classified Above.” Attending those seminars is a way to discuss ‘basic research’ which is a form of discipline based scholarship. Make sure you note that you attended and indicate the type of presentation and the presenter.

Submitted Peer Reviewed Journal Articles

Question: Should I put a year for journal articles submitted and under review (applies to C3a1, C3a2, and C5a)?

Answer: Yes, please fill out the year on journal articles submitted and under review as the year you submitted the paper. So if you submitted a paper in December, the year would be 2011. If you submitted a paper this April, the year would be 2012.
