VCU Internship- Office of the Chief Medical Examiner

The Richmond office of the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner (OCME) is offering internship opportunities to select qualifying students this spring.  The internship will be for credit and requires registering for the FRSC 493 course.  Students wishing to apply need to first meet the prerequisite requirements of VCU’s Forensic Science Department, including:

  • Be a senior (84 undergraduate credits prior to the internship semester).
  • Be enrolled in VCU and in the forensic science undergraduate program for at least one semester prior to the internship semester and throughout the internship.
  • Have completed 27 credit hours of the forensic science core curriculum, including FRSC 300.
  • Have a cumulative GPA of at least 2.75.
  • Work a minimum of 125 hours in the selected internship agency over one 15-week semester period.
  • Students graduating this fall are NOT eligible.
  • Additional VCU requirements for an internship can be found here.

Additionally, the Forensic Medicine (FRSC 325) course is desired, but not required. Students interested in participating in the internship should know that they will be exposed to autopsies.  If you feel that you wouldn’t be able to stomach that aspect of the course, you should not apply.

If you meet the prerequisite requirements, the next step is to contact Dr. Connon ( to notify her of your intent to apply for the position.  Dr. Connon will provide qualified students with forms required by the OCME.  Please submit the completed OCME forms, a letter of interest and resume to the OCME email address provided by Dr. Connon (do not send them to Dr. Connon).  The OCME will evaluate all qualified applicants.

The deadline to apply for the internship is December 4th, 2017. Interviews will be conducted by the OCME on December 7th and 8th.

If you are selected for this internship opportunity, you will need to complete the VCU internship contract found here and email the completed contract to Dr. Connon.
