VCU Faculty and Staff moving to Google Apps for Education

VCU faculty and staff are joining our students on Google Apps for Education!  VCU Technology Services (VCU TS), SADA Systems and Google will be working closely to develop the migration plan for the move of email, calendars, and other data to Google Apps for Education.

This site will keep you informed of the roll-out process and how this change will affect you.

We are excited about this change but now the work truly begins.  Also, follow Technology Services on Twitter, Like Us on Facebook or add us to a Google+ circle to keep up to date on the process. For any questions concerning this transition, please contact the VCU helpIT Center (828-2227, helpIT@vcu.edu).

Will the change affect VCUHS employees as well as VCU employees? I ask because the recent email from Mark Willis seemed to be addressed to VCU Faculy and Staff and several of my colleagues in clinical departments, who use Lotus for as their email and calendar program, mentioned they had not heard about this.

The University and the Hospital operate separate installations of Lotus Notes. The University faculty and staff will be transitioning away from Lotus Notes to Google Apps. No decision has been made with regards to the Hospital’s Lotus Notes system. However, University IT staff will be meeting on April 17 with Hospital IT staff to discuss possible options.

What was the outcome of the 4/17 meeting with VCUHS?

Hospital IT staff indicated that that they would proceed with a project to review Google Apps. Contact information (Google/SADA) and hospital references (users of Google Apps) were provided to the VCUHS IT staff.

Can an individual school (SoP) work with IT staff to schedule a training session? I would like to get it on our calendar and make sure to get as many faculty/staff as possible to attend.
    Thanks.

The Training Committee is working on the schedule for the training sessions for the summer. We are currrently keeping track of schools/departments that have requested a session.

Follow-up to question by Brian on 4/17: I have a few staff members who are VCU employees that have their *.vcu.edu email routed to *.mcvh-vcu.edu accounts. Will this forwarding continue when the accounts are migrated to Google?

We need to review these case by case or department by department. If someone is not using a university email account, then should we just not set up the university account and just list the hospital email address?

I am both staff and student and I have never been a fan of Lotus notes. Is there any possibility of having the hospital email forwarded to the university email instead of the other way around?

The Hospital “might” also be moving to Google over the next year. Watch for updates !
