The Medical Education Symposium will celebrate scholarship and innovation across the continuum of medical education, offering an opportunity for educators, leaders, and learners to join a growing community interested in promoting the scholarship of teaching and learning.  All submissions will and receive peer-reviewed feedback from at least two reviewers. Works-in-progress will be considered provided sufficient evidence demonstrates viability of the approach.

Program Objectives

  • Identify educational innovations and scholarship occurring at VCU School of Medicine.
  • Enhance knowledge of new approaches to teaching and scholarship in medical education.
  • Network with faculty, trainees, and students interested in promoting educational excellence.
  • Recognize opportunities for mindful practice in teaching and learning, and patient care.

Submission Types and Format: Oral Presentation or Poster

Oral Presentation
The oral presentation is the traditional platform presentation of a research or evaluation project, completed or in progress. The format consists of a 10-minute presentation with time for questions and discussion with the audience.

Poster Presentation
A poster is a visual presentation of a project, research study, innovative program or other structured experience. A display of the program or experience will be attached to a 4′ by 6′ bulletin board provided at the meeting. Authors will be expected to be present with their poster during the poster session.

Review Criteria
Proposals will be reviewed according to Glassick’s Criteria

  • Clear Goals
  • Adequate Preparation
  • Appropriate Methods
  • Significant Results
  • Effective Presentation
  • Reflective Critique

All submissions must include:

  • Title
  • Author Name
  • Abstract (250 words max.)
  • Literature Review (250 words max.)

If submitting a research proposal, then include:

  • Research Question (20 words max.)
  • Methods (250 words max.)
  • Results (250 words max.)
  • Conclusions (250 words max.)

If you are submitting an innovation proposal, then include:

  • Learning Objectives (up to 3)
  • Description of Innovative Practice (250 words max.)
  • Discussion and Next Steps (250 words max.)

All submissions must also include:

  • Reflective Critique (250 words max.)
  • References (up to 5)
We strongly recommend you write the narrative of each proposal section in a Word document.  Then, copy+paste the narrative from Word in to the proposal section on the form.  This will prevent any time out errors and deletion of data.

To assist with preparation, the Office of Faculty Affairs’ monthly Lunchtime Learning session will focus on Presentation Design: Posters and PowerPoints. The session is scheduled for Wednesday, February  21, 2018 at 12pm in MMEC 3-101. Registration will open in January. Please plan to attend.
