Dr. Bennett Lee – Ambulatory Clerkship Director and Associate Professor of Internal Medicine at VCU School of Medicine (SOM) discuss his use of digital storytelling to engage medical students in reflective practice and active listening.
Third-year medical students in the VCU SOM ambulatory clerkship are required to engage in an “Art of Medicine” project during the month long learning experience. The project enables them to contemplate issues related to interprofessional teamwork, critical decision making, and patient care; make observations; and respond to writing prompts in their journals. Using the structured approach of digital storytelling, students use their culminating narratives, images, and audio to creatively express challenging issues related to patient encounters.
