Valerie Fletcher is the Senior Curator at the Hirshhorn Museum and
Sculpture Garden in Washington, D.C.  Dr. Fletcher’s major exhibitions include
“Utopian Visions in Modern Art” (1983), “Alberto Giacometti” (1988-89), “Four
Latin American Pioneers of Modernism: Rivera, Torres-Garcia, Lam, and Matta”
(1992), “The Human Figure Interpreted” (1995), and “Isamu Noguchi: Master
Sculptor” (2004).   She has also organized smaller scholarly exhibitions on the
works of Joseph Albers, Alexander Calder, Joseph Cornell, Paul Gauguin, Barbara
Hepworth, Henry Moore, Shahzia Sikander, and Tim Hawkinson.  Fletcher’s current
research includes the history and aesthetics of Surrealist sculpture and she
will be giving a lecture on her upcoming exhibition of Surrealist sculpture at
the Pompidou Museum in Paris.

We’re looking for someone with advanced graphic design skills (video experience is a plus) to help communicate our messages to internal and external audiences. Spring Internships at Strathmore; North Bethesda, MD

Description:
College and graduate students interested in an arts
management career are encouraged to apply for the Spring Semester Internship at
Strathmore for the period of January-May 2011. Applications are due no later
than Friday, October 1, 2010.
The Internship Program at Strathmore is
designed to provide a professional and meaningful experience in arts management
for students who wish to pursue further study or employment in the
not-for-profit arts field.

The spring internships will be based in the
marketing and communications, visual arts and event planning departments. If the
applicant is pursuing an internship for school credit, the intern will work with
the Strathmore intern coordinator to ensure that all school requirements are
met.

The successful applicant will possess at least two years of liberal
arts, arts management, or arts-related study at the college level. Excellent
written and verbal communications skills are essential. Applicants must
demonstrate a sincere interest in the behind-the-scenes operation of an arts
center. The specific job description and requirements for the spring internships
are listed below:

Duties:
ANTICIPATED DUTIES IN MARKETING AND
COMMUNICATIONS

• Market 2010-11 Season Music, Fine Art and Education
programs.
• Website performance calendars and other guerrilla marketing
online placements for 2010-11 season
• Data analytics for marketing
• Work
marketing table at performances (evening hours required)
• Press release
writing & PR plans
• Facebook, Twitter and other social media

Marketing project mutually agreed upon between intern and
VP/Marketing

ANTICIPATED DUTIES IN VISUAL ARTS
• Assist
installing and uninstalling exhibits
• Provide administrative support for
associated public programming and fall fund-raising event, “Drawing for
Art”
• Track Art sales and keep accurate records or transactions
• Attend
and support opening receptions
• Assist production of youth, adult and master
class art workshops and lecture series
• Assist with supervision of art
education programs as they take place
• Research pertaining to outdoor
festivals and east coast art and craft vendors
• Update artwork inventory of
permanent collection
• Assist with promotion and programming associated with
the sculpture garden
• Liaison to Strathmore’s artist members
• Manage
intake and pickup of artwork for Member’s work displayed in gift
shop

ANTICIPATED DUTIES IN EVENT PLANNING
• Assist in the
design and execution of social and corporate events (some evening/weekend hours
required)
• Research and develop new ideas for events at Strathmore

Calendar management and analysis
• Prepare, organize, and maintain event
folders and records
• Implement a customer satisfaction/ client feedback
survey
• Research and present client retention strategies
• Administrative
tracking of payments and ensuring all deadlines are met
• Performing a
variety of other duties as assigned and responsibilities as requested

Requirements:
The ideal candidate for a spring internship would be
available to work a flexible schedule with some weekends and evenings required
for events and programs. There will be some flexibility of work hours for
interns who need to work within their class schedule.

Successful
applicants will possess at least two years of liberal arts, arts management or
arts-related study at the college level. Excellent written and verbal
communications skills are essential. Applicants must demonstrate a sincere
interest in the behind-the-scenes operation of an arts center. Access to a car
and previous experience in customer service or arts administration are
beneficial.
