Graduation Date: May 2016

Company Name/Position: Photography Intern at Diva Status – “I will be shooting the professional photographers during their shoots as well as shooting models myself. I will also be a part of the photo shoot planning session which is where all the magic happens.”

How the Career Center/JeanetteKnowsJobs has helped you along the way: The career center did not help me with this position specifically, but it has helped me to improve my resume and keep it updated.

Any insights that you have for current students (including about Craigslist): I found this position on Craigslist. Craigslist has been great for finding free furniture for projects throughout AFO. It is great to find uses for what would otherwise be trash. That being said, it is not always reliable. I often times email ten recent craigslist adds and rarely hear back. This specific intern listing happened to email me back wanting to set up a meeting. I always send out my online portfolio thinking that if they like what they see, they will reach me. That was exactly the case here! If I were to advise ways to ensure whomever you are meeting is trustworthy, check their website and make sure you are meeting at an office. Also, make sure their website looks professional. You should be checking their company website to begin with to get a better understanding of what they do before the meeting anyway. With all that said, I would like to advise that not everyone you reach out to will respond. It is important to be persistent and always try to get yourself out there.

Do you do any freelance work? There are tons of freelance opportunities for writers, photographers, graphic designers, consultants, editors, tutors, instructors, virtual assistants, and other office-free jobs. It makes for a fantastic lifestyle.

When you start a freelance career, it can be a challenge to find solid, paying clientele. Often freelancers will work for peanuts just to find work to build their portfolio. This is NOT a good idea.

As a freelancer, you need to set a pay rate that is respectable. If you are working for pennies to compete with the other “freelancers” on elance or guru, it’s time to reconsider your approach.

Employers like to hire freelancers and they understand that they get what they pay for. If you downplay your skills and ask for nothing, an employer will expect nothing. At the same time, if you charge $100 a hour, without the talent to back it up, you’ll never find work.

Determine your freelance hourly or project rate by asking these questions:

What were you making when you worked full time? (Use a salary calculator online to help)

What are your expenses?

How long will a project take? (Calculate based on an hourly rate)

What do other legitimate freelancers charge?

What will employers pay?

As a freelancer, you should be paid fairly based on your experience. Never apologize because of your rates. Sell your talents to meet your client’s needs and location. Develop your portfolio to highlight your skills. Create a blog and a legitimate web presence to show your professionalism. Freelancing is a viable career, but you have to treat it that way.

If you’re still stuck, there is a good freelancer rate formula available here and here. Remember that every situation is unique and you need to set your rates based on experience, talent, location, and going rates. Give your rates a test drive and see how you do. Good luck!
