Eye-tracking research featured in VCU News
Over the past decade, Dr. Mark Baron, in collaboration with Dr. Paul Wetzel and George Gitchel with the Department of Biomedical Engineering at VCU, have investigated how eye movements are related to neurological movement disorders. They have utilized an eye tracking device, that consists of a headband with two small cameras, recording how a volunteer’s eyes move while following a target on a computer monitor. This short, non-invasive, painless, and simple test provides a tremendous amount of data in a short amount of time.
The findings of this research are very exciting. The research group has observed that each movement disorder results in a unique set of eye movement abnormalities. This allows the researchers to differentiate any neurological movement disorder with a high level of accuracy. To date, over 2,800 subjects have volunteered for the project, conducted at the McGuire Veteran’s Affairs Medical Center. This collaborative research project has resulted in a unique diagnostic test, that is capable of taking the results of a clinical exam, and translating it into a test that is purely objective, quantifiable, and unambiguous.
