Coming to VCU as a new student is exciting; living in the city with plenty to explore and even more to learn can get a little overwhelming. VCU Recreational Sports is here to help you make the most of your time here with activities, equipment, and community to keep you engaged and active. Here’s a few questions we’ve been hearing lately.
Is membership included in tuition?
Yes, for all fee paying students.
When can I start going to the gym?
The day after you receive your VCU ID, you’ll be in Rec Sports’ membership system, including during the summer!
Can I use both gyms?
Membership at VCU Recreational Sports includes regular access to both the Cary Street Gym and MCV Campus Recreation and Aquatic Center, inside the Larrick Student Center. Typically MCV Campus Recreation is visited by graduate students because of the nature of our MCV Campus, but students are welcome to use both gyms.
I’m wondering if I can play my favorite sport with VCU Rec Sports.
There are a variety of ways you can play competitive sports:
- Sport Clubs
Sport clubs are registered student organizations that students can join to compete with clubs from other schools. We currently have over 20 sport clubs offered to all students. To find out more, visit the Sports Clubs page at recsports.vcu.edu. To get involved, please contact the appropriate club contact on the website. Be mindful that some clubs have tryouts. Start warming up!
- Intramural Sports
VCU Rec Sports also offers intramural sports to students who want to play in a friendly competitive environment with their fellow students. It’s also a great way to meet other Rams. For more information, visit the Intramurals page at recsports.vcu.edu.
- Drop In Recreation
Drop in for a pickup game of basketball, soccer, racquet sports and more!
What is the Outdoor Adventure Program?
The Outdoor Adventure Program serves students who are seeking outdoor trips, activities, and experiences. The OAP provides low cost trips including whitewater rafting, kayaking, rock climbing, hiking and much more! More information can be found at recsports.vcu.edu. You can also email email@example.com to find out more.
What do the Aquatic Centers include?
Students can enjoy the Cary Street Gym and MCV Campus Aquatic Centers for recreation, lessons and other programs. Both Aquatic Centers house large activity pools with multiple lanes as well as heated whirlpool spas. The Cary Street Gym Aquatic Center’s two pools include equipment for basketball and volleyball, a drop slide, and a 14-foot climbing wall in the deep end.
Can I bring a guest?
Members can bring one guest to either of our gyms for $10 per day. If the guest can show a valid ID from another college/university or a military ID, the guest fee is $5.
Can I work at VCU Rec Sports?
We’re always looking to add people to our team in various positions and departments. Go to recsports.vcu.edu and click “join our team” for more information. We hire both work-study eligible and non work-study eligible students.
What’s the difference between VCU Rec Sports and VCU Athletics?
VCU Athletics oversees the university’s varsity sports teams. VCU athletic teams do not use our facilities for training or practice.
