Tasks for Week 1

It was great meeting everyone today. It seems like we are off to a great start!

Here are some tasks you should complete, so we are all on the same page by the end of this first week.

By the end of today (Jan. 17), please do the following:

Complete the technology survey, if you have not done so already: http://www.surveymonkey.com/s/masc491spring2012

Create a Twitter account and send a welcome tweet that includes the hashtag #ipadjournos. Also start following our class feed @ipadjournos and your instructor @marcusmessner.

I will e-mail you a link to a Google Doc today. Make sure that you can read and edit it. If not, please send me an e-mail.

Before class on Thursday (Jan. 19), please do the following:

Take a look at the assigned readings for this week.

Download the six apps on your iPad from the Hastech folder. Download Kindle, Amazon and PDF Reader from the public tab and iMovie, SoundNote and G-Whizz! Google Browser from the purchased tab. Do not pay for these. They are all pre-paid.

Also download the following apps to your iPad (go to the App Store on your iPad to search and download): VCU Mobile (for iPhone), Facebook, Twitter, Skype, Prezi, Photoshop Express, SoundCloud, CBS 6, Mix RVA, NBC 12. They are all free.

Create accounts on the social media platforms Facebook, Google, Skype, Diigo and LinkedIn. You don’t have to do anything besides creating the accounts. In general, it is up to you whether you want to use your existing social media accounts or create new ones. I expect a professional presentation and continuous engagement on your accounts throughout the semester. You decide whether you need to separate personal and professional accounts or whether they can be combined.

You do not need to create a blog or Facebook page, yet. We’ll do that later. It’s actually better to wait a bit to see your options for these.

For class on Thursday (Jan. 19), please bring the following:

Your fully charged iPad and your mobile phone.

Your Amazon.com account login information (if you don’t have one, please create one). We will buy the textbook together on Thursday.

Please let me know, if you have any questions. Jimi Archer from Hastech, who handed out the iPads today, offered to be in our classroom at 9:15 a.m. on Thursday to tackle any technology problems. So, take advantage of that, if you need extra help.
