School of Medicine: Message From the Dean

Department of Internal Medicine’s Leadership

John E Nestler, MD Chair Internal Medicine

John E. Nestler, M.D.

Dear Colleagues-Friends:

Since 1985 when John E. Nestler, M.D., joined the faculty of the School of Medicine, his colleagues have benefited from his ingenuity, collegiality and wise counsel. Fortunately, that will not change when he steps down from his post as chair of the Department of Internal Medicine on June 30. He will continue as a member of our faculty, devoting himself to research and to cultivating those fascinating opportunities that exist where medicine intersects with the arts and humanities.

Nestler became the fifth chair of the medical school’s largest clinical department in November 2009 after having already served as the department’s vice chair and, prior to that, as chair of the Division of Endocrinology and Metabolism.

We are fortunate to be able to call upon Todd Gehr, M.D., to serve as interim chair.Todd Gehr, M.D. On faculty since 1987, he is now the vice-chair of the department as well as chair of the Division of Nephrology.

Todd Gehr, M.D.

Todd Gehr, M.D.

Gehr serves as professor, medical director of the dialysis unit and as physician director of the home dialysis program. Recognized with numerous teaching awards from medical students and internal medicine housestaff, he’s published more than 100 articles on research interests that span renal pharmacology, novel treatments of hypertension and the impact of daily dialysis on patient outcomes.

I am proud to note that both Nestler and Gehr completed a portion of their training here on the MCV Campus. They are testimonies to the quality of the programs and, indeed, their decades of service have shaped their department in lasting ways.

Please join me in thanking them for their contributions and assisting them in their future endeavors.

Warm regards,

Peter F. Buckley, M.D.
