There are so many things one needs to carry, as this is the first time you are going abroad. If you have a friend who is going to the same university, for the same semester, it is better to share few things. This saves space as well as money. In this section, I have listed the most common things that the seniors have carried and suggest you to do. I’ve also included the quantity of each item. Many commodities like clothes, foot ware, leather items are expensive in US. Therefore it is a must that you go through the entire section and make a note of these things before you begin shopping to ensure that you don’t miss something. But first check out the ‘not to bring’ list….

Things you should NOT bring:

These are the things, which either don’t work here or are very cheap here:

  • Electricals and Electronics (like iron): Here appliances work on 110 V, 60 Hz supply compared to 220V, 50Hz in India. So they won’t work here. Besides gadgets like MP3 players, digicams are pretty cheap here so need not bring them from India.
  • Files, folders: In U.S. three hole filing system is used, so you’ll need to buy them here anyways.
  • Soaps, detergents, shampoos: Only bring the quantity sufficient for a month or so before you go for shopping here. However if you have fancy for a particular brand or use some thing regularly (Fair and Lovely or Vatika hair oil), bring stocks sufficient for at least an year.
