Dan Han, VCU Information Security Officer, reports that Dell SecureWorks has become aware of a new Facebook exploit which we want to make those in the VCU community aware of who utilize this social networking site. If you receive an email saying that you have a new picture posted on Facebook, double check the associated hyperlink. Be advised you may see an extra “o” (e.g. faceboook) in the link. This link passes the target to another site with a photo of your timeline and downloads a software exploit kit that then redirects you to the real Facebook site. This redirection will likely be undetected you. The goal is the downloading of the malware exploit kit to your computer which can be used to access your data. Please contact the VCU helpIT Center (828-2227, helpIT@vcu.edu) with any questions.
