Welcome Week 2011

by Cara Thompson, undergraduate admissions
The excitement and anticipation is mounting as our new freshman class is moved in (check out a video of move-in weekend here) and are now waiting for classes to start. VCU has done an amazing job putting together a week designed to get the entire campus excited about the new school year. Enter, Welcome Week 2011. Each day during the week (August 20-28) is full of campus tours, comedy hours, information sessions, a job fair, cook-outs, game nights, outdoor adventures, department socials, block parties, discussion panels, community service opportunities and much more! Students who have a break in between all of the Welcome Week activities can complete a survey to be entered into a drawing to win a brand new iPad 2! Not to mention, students caught wearing their VCU gear by the PapaRAMzzi could win $25 to spend at the VCU Barnes and Noble Bookstore to purchase even more black and gold attire!

Move-In Weekend

by Katherine Beck, admissions counselor
Even though it’s still August, for us here at VCU, it sure feels a lot like fall. Not weather wise (because, wow has it been a hot!) but more so because our fall 2011 classes start in just six days. That’s right, in less than one week our fall semester officially begins, meaning thousands of recent high school grads will (finally) begin their college career.
Our newest Rams will be moving in this weekend and we cannot wait to have them here! After extra-long twin sheets have been put on beds, clothes have been strategically stored (space is tight!) and goodbyes have been said, our newest students will get to enjoy Welcome Week. More details on what Welcome Week entails will be in our next blog, but you can get a sneak peak here: http://www.welcomeweek.vcu.edu/.
For now, let us WELCOME our newest class! Go Rams!

Summer Reading

by Ryan Hannifin, undergraduate admissions
Did you know that VCU has a summer reading program for our incoming freshman? All first-year freshman students are given a book to read (for free!) at New Student Orientation. Students are expected to read the selected book before Welcome Week, their first week on campus, where students will participate in discussions about the book. These discussions are seen as each student’s first real academic experience here at VCU. Often times, the book is also referred to throughout the student’s first year of classes.
This year, The Other Wes Moore by Wes Moore is the selected summer reading book. Not only did students receive a free copy of the book, but the author will be on campus during the first week as VCU’s Fall 2011 Convocation speaker. This is the second year that the author if the selected summer reading book has come to campus to speak, really bringing the experience full circle for our first-year students.

iPad 2s

by Katherine Beck, admissions counselor
It’s been quiet on the blog recently and I think I have a sneaking suspicion why: admissions counselors and our recruitment staff here in the Office of Undergraduate Admissions all got early birthday presents last week – iPad 2s! “Apps” has become the buzz word around the office as we all toy around with our new recruitment tools, and with that mind, we want to remind all of you out there with smart phones about the cool apps VCU has to offer.
Check out VCU Mobile, and remember, VCU has an app for that!
