Richmond Event Guide: Summer Fun!

By: Phoenecia Hill, Admissions Counselor

Are you planning to be in the Richmond area this summer? In addition to visiting campus, there is always an opportunity to experience something new and exciting in a city filled with great history, culture, and many fun events. Every year Richmond hosts events such as the annual Greek Festival (May 30-June2), Watermelon Festival in Carytown (Aug. 11), Richmond Jazz Festival (Aug. 9-11), and new for this year: the Washington Redskins Training Camp (July 25-Aug. 16).

Below are a few websites to get you started on taking advantage of events in the VCU area and around the city. Whether you’re looking for great dining options, shopping, summer music series, or local festivals, I encourage you to try something new and different when visiting Richmond.

VCU’s All About Richmond Virginia website not only gives information about the city, but has a listing of things to do around VCU, provides information about getting around town, and provides a great listing of popular restaurants and shopping centers in the area.

For those who have recently been admitted to the university, get started on completing this fun list of 175 things to do before you graduate from VCU! You can also post pictures as you mark off activities from the list.

Check out for area events calendars, summer concert guides, restaurant reviews, and more!

Style Weekly, online or on newsstands and in businesses around Richmond, has become a staple in Richmond and provides information about the latest events, local news stories, movie and restaurant guides, and more.

For the young professionals out there, you may want to check out HYPE (Helping Young Professionals Engage). A program of the Greater Richmond Chamber, HYPE showcases the Richmond region as THE place for young professionals to establish personal and professional roots. HYPE provides regular social and educational programming that allows young people ages 21 – 35 to create new relationships and learn from established leaders.

If your calendar isn’t already filled, head on over to River City Rapids calendar to find a listing of even more area events related to live music, arts and culture, festivals and food, and sports and outdoors.

Have fun exploring Richmond this summer and throughout the year!
