As we kick off July, that also means we are fast approaching the moment that the VCU class of 2019 has been waiting for — you’re about to enter your first year as a college student! We hope you’re as excited about coming to VCU as we are to have you joining us this fall! Now that you are part of our family, we want to make sure that you and your family are aware of some great resources and events that can make your transition easier.
Freshman move in will be held on August 15, 2015. Residential Life and Housing staff, as well as faculty/staff and students from across the university, will be on hand to assist with unloading your vehicle and getting your belongings into your residence hall room. August in Richmond can be pretty warm, so remember to bring plenty of water to help keep cool in the heat. More details regarding the move-in process and what time you should arrive for check-in can be found online at http://www.housing.vcu.edu/students/prospective/9-month-move-in/. Please contact their office if you have any further questions by e-mail at firstname.lastname@example.org or by phone at (804) 828-7666.
If you need to pick up any last minute items once you arrive to campus, there are many stores located nearby. Some local favorite options are the Barnes and Noble at VCU (1111 West Broad St.); Kroger (901 N. Lombardy St.); Target (5401 West Broad St.); Willow Lawn shopping center (1601 Willow Lawn Dr.); and Walmart (7901 Brook Rd. or 2410 Sheila Ln.). A newly opened Walmart on Campus is conveniently located on campus at 912 W. Grace St. This smaller-scaled Walmart is designed with students’ needs in mind and includes a pharmacy.
When you arrive here on August 15, it will be the start of Welcome Week. Every year Welcome Week is full of free and fun events! This is a great opportunity to meet many people, win lots of free stuff and a chance to explore the campus. The list of events has yet to be finalized, but the complete list will be available at http://www.welcomeweek.vcu.edu/. You do not want to miss out on any of the events that we have for you!
Finally, be sure to mark your calendars for the UCI Road World Championships that will be taking place in Richmond between September 19 – 27, 2015. This is one of the largest international bike races, second only to the Tour de France. Several courses for the race will go right through campus! This event is sure to be an amazing thing to see and there are several ways in which students, faculty and staff can get involved. Remember — classes will not be in session during the week of the bike race.
