One of the most commonly asked questions that we get from students is “When will I get a decision from VCU?”
The short answer: Students who apply and submit all materials to complete their application package by Jan. 15 will hear a decision from us in writing, via U.S. mail, by April 1. Since applications are reviewed on a rolling basis, it is possible to hear something from us before April.
The longer explanation: VCU receives thousands of applications each year from students seeking entry into the university (we received over 17,000 applications for fall 2016). Once applications are submitted electronically, they must be processed and matched with transcripts, test scores, recommendations, etc. Complete application packages are then ready for review by our counseling staff members.
Each application undergoes several reads by our counseling staff — and yes, we really do read all of your application materials, including essays and letters of recommendations! Decisions are made holistically taking into consideration a number of factors such as the types of classes that a student has taken in high school, their academic performance throughout high school, test scores, leadership/involvement in extracurricular activities, recommendations, essays, etc. After decisions have been made, letters are generated for printing and finally processed for mailing.
Our team spends many hours processing and reviewing applications. This isn’t a process that we take lightly, nor do we want to hastily make decisions that may not be best for applicants or for the university. We encourage applicants to communicate with us throughout the admissions process. Feel free to provide us with updated academic information that you believe will help us to make the best informed decision. Don’t be afraid to contact us with any questions that you have throughout the admissions process — we’re all here to help. We look forward to reading your application!
