SRO Members who have shown interest in officer positions will deliver a brief speech detailing their qualifications for election, including how they would contribute to the further development of the Student Research Organization.

At the conclusion of the presentations, members will vote to elect the new officers.

Emerging Researchers National Conference in STEM – Presentation Opportunity


Dear Student Researchers:


You are invited to present your research at the 2012 Emerging Researchers National (ERN) Conference in STEM, to be held at the Westin Peachtree Plaza Hotel, Atlanta, GA, on Feb23-25, 2012.

A limited number of travel awards are available for students who are selected for poster or oral presentations at the ERN Conference.  Please check with your advisor to determine if you should submit an abstract and apply for a travel award.

The ERN Travel Award will cover the conference registration, housing, airfare, and ground transportation.  For travel award recipients, the AAAS staff will process the conference registration and make the hotel arrangements.

All applications will be reviewed and evaluated using the following criteria: (1) academic achievement and (2) STEM career interest. For award finalists, we will contact faculty mentors to verify student GPAs and for an explanation of why travel support cannot be paid from their NSF grant or other sources.


The Application Deadline is October 21, 2011.

Notifications of travel awards will be sent by December 2, 2011.

Summer Research Opportunity with Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory


CSHL’s Undergraduate Research Program (URP) provides one of the few places where young people are instructed in the techniques of modern biology while becoming integrated members of a vibrant scientific community.  Each year, approximately 25 students from around the world are accepted to the fully subsidized, 10-week summer program to work with senior Laboratory staff members on independent research projects in: Cancer biology; Neuroscience; Plant biology; Cellular and molecular biology; Genetics; and   Computational biology.

 Eligible applicants are young men and women from around the world.  Any matriculated college sophomore or junior with a strong academic background may apply.

 A stipend of $4,000 will be paid for the 10-week period. All room & board expenses will be covered.

All applicants must complete an URP application form with a personal statement online at   Faxed, mailed, or emailed applications will not be accepted.

Official transcripts are not required.

Applicants must arrange for two recommendations to be submitted online. Faxed, mailed, or emailed recommendation forms will not be accepted.

Dates and Deadlines
The deadline for receipt of completed applications, including letters of recommendation, is January 15, 2012.  Applications will not be reviewed if they are received after the deadline.  Notification of application status will be sent to students by the end of March 2012.

The 2012 URP Program will be held from Tuesday, June 5 – Saturday, August 11, 2012.

The VCU Undergraduate Research Opportunities Program (UROP) will host a workshop for undergraduate students entitled, “Preparing for Undergraduate Research” on October 11th, 2011 at 10am in room 216 of Hibbs Hall. 

The workshop will provide information about upcoming opportunities for research at VCU, and will help interested undergraduates prepare themselves for a research experience.   In order to participate, students must register first by
